Understanding Human Trafficking as Self-Care

Doctor Kellee

January is the month we bring attention to the global crisis known as human trafficking. Human trafficking affects millions of people worldwide. It involves the exploitation of individuals through force, fraud, or coercion. Human trafficking has many faces, including forced labor, sexual exploitation, and domestic servitude. Human trafficking occurs in every state but is most prevalent in California, Texas, Florida, Mississippi, and Nevada.

What is Human Trafficking?

Human trafficking is modern-day slavery. Traffickers exploit vulnerable individuals for profit. Victims can be of any age, gender, or nationality, and they often face physical and emotional abuse, threats, and manipulation.

How to Protect Your Loved Ones

  1. Educate Yourself and Others: Visit https://humantraffickinghotline.org/en to learn more about human trafficking.

  2. Open Communication: Maintain open and honest communication with your loved ones. Discuss how human trafficking can occur and ways to prevent it, especially for teenagers and young adults. Many victims are initially contacted via social media. Be vigilant when it comes to your children and their social media presence.

  3. Build Strong Relationships: Foster strong, supportive relationships with your family and friends. A strong support system can help prevent isolation and vulnerability.

  4. Stay Informed: Stay current with local and global news about human trafficking. Understanding the trends and tactics used by traffickers can help you stay vigilant.

  5. Report Suspicious Activity: If you suspect someone is a victim of human trafficking, report it to the authorities immediately. In the United States, you can contact the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888 or text "HELP" to 233733.

Human trafficking is a pervasive issue worldwide and requires a multimodal approach to eradication. By educating ourselves, staying vigilant, and supporting survivors, we can make a difference in the fight against human trafficking.
