Preparation as Self-Care

Doctor Kellee

Last week we discussed the need to reset as we start the new year. The process of resetting means assessing our plans and determining our goals. Do you have established goals you want to achieve this year? If you answered yes, this blog is for you. It is not enough to set goals. We must plan for success. One of my former teachers used to say, “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Once you have identified your goals and written them down, preparation begins. Writing out your goals and how you intend to achieve them, is a necessary first step. I would argue the preparation period is the most important predictor of your ability to succeed. During this time, you should anticipate possible pitfalls and safeguard your goal with a contingency plan. Remember to extend grace to yourself during the journey. There will be setbacks. Believe you have everything you need to realize your goals. You can do hard things! Here are a few tips to help you get and stay ready!

5 Preparation Tips to Achieve Your Goals

1. Do your research and learn as much as you can about your goal.

2. Identify a mentor or someone who has successfully achieved your goal. No need to reinvent the wheel. It is OK to walk in someone else’s footsteps with your style and flare infused.

3. Remember, mindset matters. If you think you can, you’re right. If you think you won’t succeed, you are correct.

4. Continue to hone your craft and improve your skills. Practice does make perfect.

5. Always stay connected to your “why.” Your why is the reason you are striving to reach your goal.

Malcolm X said, “Tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today.” It is not enough to dream. Preparation is what separates dreamers from achievers. Make 2024 your best year yet. Plan for success. I am pulling for you!

Here’s to your health!
