Healthy Aging as Self-Care

The American population is getting older due to advancements in medicine. Life expectancy in the US is currently 78.6 years. We have better preventative care measures, medical interventions and medications that allow patients to live with chronic illnesses. Healthy aging requires a commitment to wellness and a strong care team that values preventative care. Regular office visits also allow for early detection in changes in health status.

Here are 7 Tips to Aid in Healthy Aging:

  1. Eat a balanced healthy diet that is low in carbohydrates/fat and rich in green vegetables and fiber

  2. Consistent exercise 3-4 times a week for at least 20-30 minutes

  3. Prioritize mental health and self-care daily

  4. Minimize stress

  5. Communicate with your physician often and early when you detect changes in your health

  6. Minimize alcohol consumption and avoid tobacco use

  7. Get adequate sleep
