The Power of Hand Washing as Self-Care
Cold and flu season is here! We must prioritize our health and well-being. One of the simplest yet most effective ways to protect ourselves and our loved ones is through regular hand washing. Handwashing should be a daily habit and is a powerful tool in our health arsenal.
The Science Behind Hand Washing
Hand washing is a first line of defense against the spread of infections. Our hands contact countless surfaces throughout the day, picking up germs that can cause illnesses like the cold, flu, and even more serious infections. By washing our hands, we remove these germs before they enter our bodies or spread to others.
When to Wash Your Hands
To maximize the benefits of hand washing, it's important to know when to do it. Here are some key times to wash your hands:
Before eating or preparing food
After using the restroom
After coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose
After touching public surfaces, such as doorknobs and handrails
After caring for someone who is sick
After handling garbage
Proper Hand Washing Technique
Effective hand washing involves more than just a quick rinse. Follow these steps to ensure your hands are thoroughly cleaned:
Wet your hands with clean, running water (warm, not hot), turn off the tap, and apply soap.
Lather your hands by rubbing them together with the soap. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between your fingers, and under your nails.
Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds. Need a timer? Hum the "Happy Birthday" song from beginning to end twice.
Rinse your hands well under clean, running water.
Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.
When soap and water aren't available, hand sanitizer is a good alternative. Choose a sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol and use it as follows:
Apply the gel to the palm of one hand.
Rub your hands together.
Rub the gel over all the surfaces of your hands and fingers until your hands are dry. This should take around 20 seconds.
Hand washing is a simple act, but its impact is profound. By making it a regular part of our routine, especially during cold and flu season, we can significantly reduce the spread of illness. This not only protects our health but also helps safeguard our families, friends, and communities. By championing the importance of hand washing, we can lead by example and promote a healthier, safer environment for everyone.
