Giving To Others as Self-Care

Doctor Kellee

The Bible speaks about the blessings attached to giving. According to Proverbs 11:27, “A generous person will prosper; whoever refreshes others will be refreshed.” Luke 6:38 says, “Give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together, and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”

The holiday season is a good time to take stock of your blessings. If you have food to eat, a roof over your head, and are in your right mind, you have much to be grateful for. Many of us live in abundance and can afford to be a blessing to someone else. The holidays can be challenging for some, and they may be dependent on the generosity of others. Giving to others blesses the receiver but is also a blessing to the giver. It is satisfying to help others selflessly. If you are able, give to those in your community who are in need. There is no shortage of organizations to engage with during the holidays. You can donate your time, money, or other resources for the betterment of others. Here are a few ways to give to others this holiday season.

Giving Opportunities

  1. Support the efforts of your local church.

  2. Adopt a family.

  3. Provide resources (clothing, shoes, food) to a local women’s shelter.

  4. Volunteer to serve food at a homeless shelter.

  5. Send greeting cards to the residents of your local nursing home.

  6. Invite someone to your holiday gathering.

The holidays are a wonderful time to spread love and show compassion to others. While most of us have our choice on how to celebrate the holidays, let us not forget those who are less fortunate. We are blessed to be a blessing. This holiday season, consider cheerfully giving to others in need.

Here’s to your health!
