Every day we should take stock of all we have. Many of us live in abundance and have everything we need. The holidays are a great time to give to the less fortunate. While giving helps the recipient, it also benefits the giver. There is research to suggest that giving reduces blood pressure and stress levels. Giving makes us feel good and activates the pleasure centers in the brain. Researchers have also found that givers feel a greater sense of purpose and overall satisfaction. The feeling of making a measurable difference in the lives of others improves the physical and psychological well-being of the giver. The Bible says in Luke 6:38, “Give, and it shall be given unto you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over...." Simply put, the scripture teaches that giving to others causes us to reap more than we gave. There are so many ways to be a blessing to others and spread joy throughout the holiday season. Here are a few ideas for you to consider.
5 Ways to Give to Others
Consider adopting a child or a family for the holidays. There are organizations throughout your community that provide social services. See if there are ways for you to support their efforts.
Ask if you can purchase groceries for someone in line at the store.
Pay for the coffee/meal of the person behind you in line.
Give the gift of your time to a charitable organization that services those in need within your community.
Clean out the closets in your home and donate to the Salvation Army or a homeless shelter. There is always a great need for warm clothing at this time of the year.
It is a blessing to be in the position to give. Giving does not have to be about money or tangible things. You can give the gift of your time or offer your services to benefit others. Be creative, but most of all, be a cheerful giver. The act of giving benefits you and those who will receive your gift.
Here’s to your health!
