Cancer Screening as Self-Care

Doctor Kellee

Cancer is caused by abnormal cells that can affect any tissue and organ in the body. These abnormal cells “hijack” the body’s normal processes and multiply rapidly and uncontrollably. Some cancers develop from genetic mutations, environmental influences, and lifestyle choices such as tobacco or alcohol use. Some cancers may have symptoms, and others do not. Most cancers can be treated if detected early in the disease process. The more advanced the disease, the poorer the outcome. Cancer treatment may involve surgery, chemotherapy, medications, or radiation therapy. Cancer can be a devastating illness physically, emotionally, and financially. Undergoing age-appropriate screening is essential to early detection. Annual visits to your physician are a great way to ensure you are up to date with your screenings. Here are a few screening tests you should know about.

Breast Cancer

  • Mammograms are recommended annually for women aged 40 to 74.

Cervical Cancer

  • HPV tests and Pap Smears are recommended for women aged 21 to 65 every 2-3 years, depending on risk factors and previous results.

Colorectal Cancer

  • Colonoscopy and Stool Tests are recommended for people aged 45 to 75 and may be done every 5, 7, or 10 years, depending on risk factors.

Lung Cancer

  • A low-dose CT Scan is recommended for people aged 50 to 80 years who have a history of long-term tobacco use.

Prostate Cancer

  • Men aged 40 and over should undergo screening with a blood test PSA (prostate-specific antigen) annually and may also require a digital rectal examination (DRE).

If you have a primary relative (parents, siblings) with cancer, your screening should begin 10 years before their age at diagnosis. Your screening may start at a younger age than the guidelines suggest if there is a family history.
