Autonomy means the right to govern yourself and make your own decisions independent of external control. Said another way, “Do what works for you!” As adults, we (should) have the right to make decisions about every aspect of our lives as we see fit. We do not need the approval of others. Where we live. How we live. Whom we choose to marry. Whether or not we choose to have children. The career path we decide to pursue. How we spend our money. How we worship. These are all decisions that we make throughout our lives. Many factors dictate how we make life’s decisions, but most people are guided by personal satisfaction and happiness. Our past experiences are also a driver in the decision-making process. We do what pleases us and make changes when our choices no longer serve us. The freedom to make educated (or uneducated) decisions should be our right.
Advocating for yourself and making decisions that serve you as an individual is a part of self-care. Living a life that is authentic should be the standard. Live life on your terms even if your choice goes against the norm. You have no one to please and no one to blame for the consequences of your actions but yourself. Despite recent events, I believe that personal freedom is necessary for growth and should be protected. As I have stated before, our mistakes build character and help us develop into the fullness of who God called us to be. Deliverance from public opinion and scrutiny enables us to live our best lives.
Here’s to your health!
